On August 7, 1942, Allies forces (primarily US Marines) landed on the islands
of Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida in the eastern Solomon Islands, in an
effort to deny the Japanese the use of these islands to threaten supply convoys
between the United States and Australia. The Allies also planned on using
these islands, especially the airfield soon to be called Henderson Field,
as a launching point for a campaign to recapture the whole of the Solomons,
cut off and destroy the Japanese base at Rabaul, and support the Allied New
Guinea campaign. For the next six months the Allies and Japanese would clash
brutally and bloodily over these islands.
The landings took the Japanese completely by surprise. Admiral Gunichi Mikawa,
commander of the newly formed Japanese Eighth Fleet at Rabaul, immediately
gathered all available ships in order to attack the Allied transports and
warships at Guadalcanal, timing his attack to occur in the wee hours of the
morning. His force consisted of the heavy cruiser Chokai, the light cruisers
Tenryu and Yubari, the destroyer Yunagi, and the heavy cruisers of Cruiser
Division Six (Aoba, Kinugara, Furutaka, and Kako).
British Admiral Victor Crutchley was put in charge of a combined Australian/US
screening force that was to intercept and stop any incursions by the Japanese
Navy. After he divided up his force and stationed radar pickets, he went off
to a conference called by US Rear Admiral Turner to discuss the withdrawal
schedules of the transports and combat ships from the region. He left Captain
Howard D. Bode of the US heavy cruiser Chicago in charge.
It is now 0100 hours, August 9, 1942. Your crew, exhausted from the previous
two days of heat, humidity and combat, is mostly asleep. You, too, are sound
asleep. And the excitement of the new day is about to begin...
