Complexity: Introductory
Since it was made a State as part of the old United States of America
in 1959, most Hawai`ians never really felt *part* of the USA. It's
culture and heritage was so vastly different from the rest of the
United States that Mainland visitors felt as if they had gone to
a foreign country whenever visiting. Mainland prejudices also excluded
Hawai`i from much of what was going on in America (from the "national"
news to the Weather Channel to sports). Over the decades and into the
22nd century, Hawai`ians felt more and more resentment at being a
member of a country in which they weren't even considered or thought
of except as a destination spot for the rich, and felt more and more
used by the Mainland people as time went on. During the Second Solar
War, the Oceanic Union applied subtle pressures within the government
of Hawai`i, fueling this resentment. The idea was to have Hawai`i cede
from the NAC and join the expanding OU power. The first step of their
plan worked - immediately after Free Cal-Tex gained their independence,
Hawai`i also declared independence from the NAC. The NAC, having lost
the FCT, wasn't real keen at losing another member. However, Hawai`i
*was* very different than the rest of the NAC, and there was not a
very strong movement in the NAC government to hold onto the island
state (there were other islands under NAC control that were more
amenable for military bases - such as Midway and a few other isolated
islands). In any event, the NAC would not let Hawai`i go without a
fight, even if half-hearted (mostly because the NAC was *still*
recovering from the Second Solar War!). This scenario recreates
one of the more telling sea battles fought between the NAC and the
Hawai'ian Free State, using slightly modified Full Thrust rules.
