When Wayne Gretzky named the first 8 players of the team, Lindros was not on the team. This is the same Lindros that many people in Toronto believed was worth any price to bring to the team.
Now, don't get me wrong -- he's a very good hockey player. He brings a combiantion of speed, size, strength to a forward line that you don't find in very many players. He could be a real asset to a hockey team.
But that's the problem. 'Could.' I don't understand how somebody out of hockey shape, with a documented medical problem can be worth more than players who are playing now and are healthy now. I don't care how good you are. This person is one hit away from the end of his career -- or worse. Anybody who saw him curled up senseless last year during the Stanely Cup playoffs must have seen the possible consequences of his continued playing.
Let him prove he's worth his weight in labels before the rest of the nation takes a gamble on him. It's harsh, but, it's common sense. Let him get back into hockey shape, and name him later -- or see that he can't play the game any more, and let him retire in peace.
