Over the past couple of weeks, I have had to watch two of my friends break down in tears because of the things life throws their way. I watched one because some of her friends decided she wasn't worth being around any more. I watched another because of the fact the University of Waterloo Co-op system is seriously screwed up. And if I let my memory go back further, I can see a lot of tear tracks.
Why? Are we, as a people on this Earth, pre-destined to cause each other pain and suffering? The historical evidence seems to indicate so. Considering our wars, our bickering, and our petty violence, the ability for a human to hurt his/her fellows seems pretty well proven. Consider how we handled Jesus Christ, almost 2000 years ago.
I know a couple of people who would say "Life sucks" and leave it at that. "Everything above is true, we're all doomed, there ain't no point." But I refuse to believe that.
I refuse to believe that because I, personally, don't know anybody who hurts other people through malicious intent. And I refuse to believe that we're doomed. If we're doomed, why did God put us on the planet in the first place? Why do men and women continue to try to give life meaning, be it through a good deed, a good word, or a good idea? It just doesn't make sense when you plug the variables into the equation.
I've met many decent human beings on my travels on this planet, and I haven't met one malicious soul in the bunch. The only fault I could give them (and myself) is that of being careless.
Hmmm. Being careless. Usually being careless is considered a "minor" flaw, not as bad as being deliberately evil. But when we think about what we're being careless about, maybe it isn't so minor after all. Unless you consider a couple of wars minor. No? How about the destruction of our planet's biosphere?
How about the human heart?
We've all thought of how malicious actions can cause pain. Maybe it's time all of us start thinking about what being careless really means, and how much pain and suffering that can cause. Maybe we might even think of how our actions can affect other people, and what happens when we get careless.
How many times do tears have to roll down people's faces before we realize that something may be wrong?
