02/24/2005: "hear that flushing sound?"
Today I decided to give my old boss a call. He's a good guy, and despite the fact that he had to lay me off, I like to keep in touch with him once in a while. I thought it would be good to phone him up and let him know that I got my professional designation, just in case he could pass my name along in the future. Turns out that I never got around to telling him about it.
He told me that the company I was laid off from is now in receivership.
Basically, that's just another way of saying they're bankrupt. It's a little bit different (from what I can gather), in that the company is still there, and it's not being liquidated. I think in this instance they're hoping to find a new owner and perhaps save the company. In any case, he told me that it's a good thing I'm not there, and that nobody really knows what's going to happen next.
So, I got out with just 3 months until bankruptcy set in. Wow. I never knew it was so close.
Another reason I called him today was to see if they were doing well enough (ie., had recovered financially) that they might be rehiring at some point in the future. I guess I know what the answer to that is now.
Hmm... I wonder how I would go about making an offer on some of the assets that business has. I'd love to be able to get my hands on one of their CAD stations, along with the peripherals and a CAD license. That would be very nice to have. I might have to look into that.
