damn you, dark chocolate!!

Chocolate and I usually get along quite famously. Just ask the extra padding surrounding my bellybutton. There have only ever been two times in my life that chocolate was unkind to me, and I learned my lessons from those events.

Turns out there was a bit more to learn.

one wild dream last night

I dream very regularly, and more often than not remember my dreams. In some instances the dreams stay with me for a very long time, especially if they involve powerful emotions in them. I still remember one dream I had as a kid, simply because it had an impact on me.

Last night I had a very interesting dream. I'm not sure what to make of it (if anything) but I thought I'd share it.

thinking out loud about career moves

Now that school is off the table, I now have the headspace and the immediate need to consider career plans. Yes, I'm employed right now. No, it doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon. And no, I do not see myself continuing with contracting long-term. Both Jannette and I are looking for some income stability, and benefits would be very welcome at this point as well.

The question is, what do I want to do with my professional life?

and from left field comes the DIY diesel hybrid

After so much pondering about commuting to Toronto, one of the lines of thought I had been pursuing was - surprise, surprise - what kind of vehicle would be best for commuting such a distance. Should I get a tiny car with an equally tiny gas engine? What about a used hybrid, either a Honda Insight or a Toyota Prius? Then again, diesels seem to be very good for long-distance driving - maybe a used VW with a TDI engine, or even a low-end smart fortwo, depending on the price. (For the record, I would have gone diesel.)

As my mind is wont to do, it came up with an idea that is as equally fascinating and promising as it is out of my ability to actually implement it: a do-it-yourself diesel hybrid.

not from working in Toronto

It's over, but it's not. It's a relief, yet a disappointment. I'm talking, of course, about the job I was hoping to land in Toronto. This morning I got notice that they will be going with two other, more experienced candidates. So I won't be commuting to Toronto anytime soon. However, they did say that they'd like to stay in contact with me, which makes me believe that they see potential in me for a future role, one where I can become a contributing member more quickly than I would have been able to in this particular position.

In a way, I am actually very relieved. Disappointed, but still relieved.

this time I'm telling you after the fact

A while back I mentioned about a phone interview I was granted for a Sustainable Building Specialist position in Toronto. That phone call went extremely well, and was very pleasantly devoid of the standard slightly-off-kilter behavioural questions - a nice change. I can say it went well because they confirmed a face-to-face interview with me shortly afterwards.

That face-to-face interview happened this morning at 9am. I met with both the HR person I talked to previously, and the head of the Sustainable Building department that has the open position. Dare I say that it went well? Why not - I think it did.

sun angle follow-up

Thanks for all the responses I got in regards to my problems finding information about sun angles. Although I now have the two numbers I need, I got a response from a friend of mine who knows a local astronomer. His response was:

what to do with a bunch of incandescent lightbulbs?

Being the energy-savvy consumer that I am, I've been replacing our incandescent bulbs with compact fluourescent bulbs over the past few years. Jannette was complaining about the bright white colour of the ones I had in the basement, so I bought an 8-pack of warmer ones, and went on a replacement spree throughout the whole house. We're more CFL than we are incandescent now, methinks.

Only problem is, now I have a stack on perfectly good (if used) incandescent lightbulbs sitting on my workbench. What am I supposed to do with them? Being green-minded and creative I'd like to say I know the perfect answer... but I don't. Chuck them in the landfill? I think not. Let someone else take and use them? Well, doesn't that defeat the purpose of REPLACING them with CFLs?

What to do?

yes, this is my final decision

I have officially terminated my upcoming enrollment in MBET.

Jannette and I had a talk on Sunday, agreed that our finances are in no shape to permit us to plunge headlong into debt, and thus decided that I will NOT be attending MBET come this September, or at any point in the forseeable future. I have already told the school and my parents - the only thing left for me to do to make it "official" is send in a letter of withdrawal to the school. That will make it official for them, but it's already a done deal with me.

Whew.

good samaritan, but on the clock

This morning I was greeted by very ugly commuting weather: freezing rain had come during the night, and ice pellets were falling. After attempting my usual back-road route, I detoured onto the highway in the hopes of finding somewhat better conditions.

The conditions were not bad, and I certainly didn't have any of the sphincter-exercising moments that I've had on previous icier days. The lady in front of me, however, was not so lucky. I watched as her van fishtailed to the left, kept on arcing clockwise, and witnessed her plunge into the ditch facing backwards, with her vehicle coming to rest on its side. I put on my 4-way flashers, stopped, got out and called 911.

sun angle/overhang design

Alack, alas, and argh! Not only has the mighty Google search failed me, but so has my next-favourite, del.icio.us! How have they failed me, you ask? It's not necessarily that they have failed to find me an answer to my question, but they have fully failed in finding the answer with the correct level of information that I need. In one case, there's far too much. In most of the others, little or none. What to do now??

The question, in case you're wondering (and I know you are) is, "What are the winter and summer sun angles for my location?"

not safe for work - but not the way you think

If someone tells you that a website is Not Safe For Work (NSFW), generally that means that if you do click on the link you'll be looking at something with nudity, gore, or other such stuff that is readily available on the 'net but generally highly frowned upon, especially if you're using your employer's bandwidth to do so.

Well, I found something today that isn't safe for work, but for an entirely different reason. So what do I term it? I don't know... all I know is it's too funny to read at work if you're within earshot of anyone else. Please meet the Anonymous Coworker.

with moderated enthusiasm, I announce something good

The only reason my enthusiasm is moderated is because of my recent, speedy let-down for the Cambridge job I was so hyper-stoked about. Regardless, the e-mail I got today confirming a phone interview for Wednesday morning in regards to the Sustainable Building Specialist position in Toronto. It's a first step, but at least I'm getting to take that step.

What happens after that, I'm not even going to discuss. One step at a time. For this step I just have to speak clearly and pleasantly, and make sure my cell phone is fully charged. :)

apparently, I'm quite hungry

I'm hungry. Not for food (well, no more than usual, anyways) but for other things. One is career change, and the other is friendship.
