it was easy, being Green

Last night was the joint annual general meeting for the Green Party for the Kitchener Centre and Kitchener-Waterloo ridings (a.k.a., electoral district associations). I was nominated for a position on the executive for my riding, and after a long and hard race (against "None of the above") I was duly elected. So there you have it - now I'm the Fundraising chair for the local Green Party. Go, me!

It wasn't just an AGM last night, it was also a fundraising event. To that end, it was arranged to have Jim Harris (current, and outgoing leader of the federal Green Party) speak at our event, open to the public.

what's up with the new Macs?

I am a Mac person. I like the way they work, I like the way they're designed, and I simply find them much more friendly than any Windows-based computer I've ever used. Truthfully, the only reason I'd ever use Windows again (or ever do so on a daily basis) is because none of the professional software I use has been ported to a Mac.

I am also now a laptop convert. I love the portability, the small footprint, and the fact that they're a heck of a lot more energy efficient than typical desktop computers are. The sleep function is my absolute favourite, where I can just close my laptop, leave it for a time, open it up and it's up and running again. No rebooting or waiting around, just open and work.

Having said all that, I'm really wary of the new Mac laptops now. I'm very glad I don't have to make a purchase anytime soon.

fire fun

I can't imagine how I forgot to mention this tidbit. I got to live every pyromaniac's dream - well, sort of. At the same time, I actually got worried about the results. Curious? Here's a hint - bacon and barbeque.

career idea

Way back, I mentioned about applying to a newly-vacated position as an IRAP ITA. (I'd link the post, but I'm pretty sure it got vapourized along with this site's server.) I did apply to that position, but never heard back.

Well, more recently, I heard that the OTHER IRAP ITA that covers this area has taken an assignment in B.C. for "a year or two". That leaves this area very much under-serviced. Although I'd love to apply for the job again, there's no point in getting shot down twice for the same thing. So I'm going to take a different approach.

browncoat, and "ow"

Jannette and I have been watching an episode of Firefly (or two) just about every night since we started watching. She's enjoying it, but still not quite sure about it. I just love it, and will be very sad when I've gone through all the episodes and the movie and have nothing else of it to watch. Maybe I'll have to pick up the comic book. Seriously, if you like Star Trek and other space-based sci fi series, check out Firefly. It's now available for purchase at iTunes (you have to go to the US site, not the Canadian one) for $1.99 apiece.

In other news, we have sharp kitchen knifes. Well, at least two of them are sharp. How do I know this?

Firefly

A friend of mine not-so-recently let me borrow his entire collection of Firefly DVDs, including the movie Serenity. Sadly, my DVD was broken, and I was going to return them to him. With the discovery of a $30 DVD player at my grocery store (that I bought with PC points), I finally got around to watching the first episodes last night.

The verdict? Yeah, baby! This is good stuff.

why is my down time so crazy?!?

Yes, I know, I've been a bad blog monkey and haven't posted for a while. There has been good reason, all of which I'll try to remember. The Reader's Digest version of it all is that things have been pretty crazy both at home and at work.

time for DIY computer repair

Just over a year ago a new Apple-authorized store opened up in town. (The former one closed up shop suddenly.) I decided to e-mail their service department about what I was thinking in terms of fixing my Pismo, just to see what their thoughts were. What they came back with certainly wasn't what I expected.
