and now, the down side

I need a new cordless phone. Not that I'm upset about that, as the one we have is a refurb, and the LCD display hasn't worked in nearly a year. Still, it's kind of a pain that it's now useless when my wi-fi hub is powered up. Yes, a 2.4 GHz phone inexplicably experiences intense interference when a 2.4 GHz wi-fi hub is sitting right next to it. Who'da thunk it?

No, I haven't tried moving the hub - or the phone. I could try that, I suppose. Still, it's a good excuse to get a 5.8 GHz multi-handset phone. After all, that would solve two problems at once; the interference, and getting a phone for the basement (once it's finished). Right now we just turn the wi-fi off when we're not using it, and that works. It's a small price to pay to be able to post from my couch.

I'm on wi-fire!

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying themselves with their families and friends.

The only reason I'm posting something today is because I can. Jannette and I got DSL for Christmas this year, which I set up this morning. Our DSL modem is also a wifi router, so I'm not only blogging at the speed of light (relative to our pokey dial-up connection, which I still have to cancel) but I'm doing so without any extra wires. Very, very froody.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to indulge myself in Apple's trailer site, just because I can. It's SO FASSSSST!! :)

confessions of a Green Party supporter

Some of you may already know that I'm a Green Party supporter. Last year (I can't believe I'm saying that about a federal election) I went so far as to put a lawn sign out. This year, not only am I doing the lawn sign thing (recycling the same sign, thank you very much) but I'm doing a limited amount of volunteering for our local candidate.

Last week that included greeting Green Party leader Jim Harris as he came into town. I went out, held my Green Party candidate's sign, sang the Green Party version of the 12 Days of Christmas, and was part of the backdrop for Jim and his handlers for the local media. After a quick tour he dropped in to the local CTV station for an interview, which I caught on the 6 o'clock news.

Confession - I was embarrassed by what I saw.

first batch

Batch one of my kibble is both a wild, rousing success and a failure. I learned a lot from it, and it turned out as well or better than I had hoped it would in some ways. However, I definitely need to go back and both reformulate and reconsider my process.

kibble, take one

As Jannette and the kids are away, I have broad discretion as to what I do with my time. I should try to use my time wisely and clean the house and pick away at my honey-do list, but tonight I've just had to ignore that. Today, after I did some banking at the grocery store, I picked up a few items, and spent 30 minutes earlier tonight mixing them with the other ingredients I already had in the house. As I type this, my first batch of sweet kibble is in the oven.

The $29.95 Stop-Gap

NFT Feature  First it was the ROM machine that got me all excited about getting in shape. Unfortunately, it's princely price tag makes acquiring one less of an immediate possibility than a lofty future goal. Just the other day, however, I came across yet another full-page fitness ad in a magazine. This time it wasn't asking for huge sums of money, and wasn't even selling any equipment. All this ad was selling was a book (some DVDs are additionally available), and a method of getting fit, all for US$29.95. Having put all that effort into researching the ROM, I had to find out more.

$14,615 Part Deux: The DVD

NFT Feature  If you got all the way through Part One, you'll remember that I concluded that the ROM should work in improving my fitness, and that I need to get someone else to pay for it. That was before the DVD arrived in the mail late last week. I've only watched it once, but that was enough. It's settled, then:

I am going to get a ROM.

The only questions that remain are: how? and when?

a happy ending

Many moons ago I posted an apology to someone I knew in highschool. (If you want the background, read the original post, as I don't feel like summarizing it right now.) Recently another highschool chum of mine clued me in to the fact that this person actually has a LiveJournal. Not knowing any better way to do it, I posted a comment on his LJ with a link to my apology.

Apparently it threw him for a bit of a loop, caused some highschool ghosts to resurface, and put him off his LJ for nearly a month, but I'm happy to say that not only did I not cause him any (memorable) distress, but the apology has been accepted (I'm pretty sure, anyways). So that particular chunk of guilt has been dealt with. Whew.
